Signs Your Water Heater Is Asking for Attention

Water heaters rarely give up without warning. The problem is that the warnings are easy to dismiss — a sound you've heard before, a minor drop in hot water temperature, a faint smell that you can't quite place. Over time, those signals escalate into a failed unit and an unexpected repair bill. Knowing what your water heater is trying to tell you puts you in control of when and how you address the problem.

Sounds You Shouldn't Ignore

A water heater doing its job should be relatively quiet — a low hum from the burner or heating element, and occasional expansion sounds from the tank. New sounds that develop over time are worth attention:

  • Rumbling or popping during heating: Sediment has accumulated on the tank floor or heating element. As water heats through the sediment layer, it creates these sounds. Annual tank flushing prevents the buildup; significant existing sediment is harder to address after the fact.
  • Whining or screeching: Can indicate a problem with the heating element or a water pressure issue affecting the system.
  • Persistent clicking: On a gas unit, occasional clicking during ignition is normal. Continuous clicking that doesn't resolve may point to an igniter or gas valve issue.

Changes in Hot Water Temperature

Temperature inconsistency is another signal worth noting. If your shower has always stayed hot for a consistent amount of time and it's now running cool sooner, the effective capacity of the tank may have been reduced by sediment buildup, or a heating element may be partially failing. If the water never gets as hot as it used to, thermostat drift or a failing element are common causes.

Discoloration or Odor

Rust-colored water from the hot tap signals internal corrosion — either the anode rod is depleted or the tank itself is corroding. A sulfur or "rotten egg" smell from hot water usually points to a reaction involving the anode rod and the water's mineral content. Both are addressable, but rust-colored water that persists after running the tap for a few minutes often indicates the corrosion is inside the tank.

According to Energy.gov water heater maintenance tips, addressing minor issues early — including anode rod inspection and annual sediment flushing — can significantly extend tank life.

Moisture Around the Unit

Any water collecting around the base of the water heater should be investigated promptly. Small amounts of condensation can be normal in high-humidity conditions, but pooling water often points to a developing leak — either from a fitting, the pressure relief valve, or the tank itself. A slow leak that's left alone will eventually become a significant leak.
