Why Your Dryer Takes Two Cycles Now (And the One Thing That Usually Fixes It)
It happened gradually. At some point in the last year or two, one dryer cycle stopped being enough. You started running it twice. Not because the first cycle failed outright, but because the clothes came out damp enough that a second run felt necessary. You adjusted. It became the new normal.
Here's what's actually going on, and why it matters more than the extra 45 minutes of electricity you're burning every laundry day.
Start With the Vent
Before heating elements, before motors, before thermostats, a technician checks the vent. On most St. Charles County service calls where a dryer is taking too long, that's where the problem turns out to be.
A dryer pulls air in, heats it, tumbles it through wet clothes, and pushes that moisture-loaded air out through a duct to the outside of the house. Block that duct and the whole cycle breaks down. Warm, humid air lingers in the drum instead of leaving. Drying times double. Clothes come out warm but damp, because they've been tumbling in a swamp rather than dry heat.
Four things cause vent blockages in homes around here:
- Lint buildup. The trap catches most fibers. Not all of them. Over time lint packs into the duct, especially at bends and at the exterior cap. If the duct hasn't been professionally cleaned in three years or more, assume it's partly restricted.
- Crushed flexible duct. Most dryers connect to the wall with a short run of flexible aluminum. Push the dryer back against the wall without leaving room for it and that section kinks. Airflow can drop by half.
- A stuck exterior cap. The flap outside your house is supposed to open when the dryer runs. Lint, paint, or pest debris can hold it shut. A cap that's 70 percent blocked does the same damage as a clogged duct.
- Bird nests. Starlings and sparrows love vent caps. A nest restricts airflow and puts dried lint and nesting material inside a warm enclosed duct, which is a genuine fire risk.
That last point deserves more than a bullet. A clogged dryer vent is a fire hazard, not just an efficiency problem. The National Fire Protection Association names dryer vents as a leading cause of home structure fires, with failure to clean the duct as the primary contributing factor. And a dryer that can't exhaust properly runs hotter than it should, which wears out every other component faster.
When the Vent Is Clear and It Still Won't Dry
If the duct checks out, the next candidates are inside the machine.
Heating element failure, electric dryers. Electric dryers heat with a coiled element. Elements fail two ways. Complete failure means the drum tumbles and produces no heat at all. Partial failure means one section of the coil breaks while the rest keeps working, cutting heat output. A dryer that runs warm but never hot, and needs two cycles, usually has a partially failed element.
Igniter or gas valve issues, gas dryers. Gas dryers need a working igniter to light the burner and valve coils to hold it open through the cycle. Both wear out. The symptom looks a lot like a partial element failure: the dryer gets warm, sometimes hot, but drops the heat too often to finish a load.
Cycling thermostat failure. This part regulates drum temperature, switching heat on and off to hold a range. A thermostat reading low shuts the heater down before the drum is hot enough, which stretches drying time. One reading high runs the drum too hot. Clothes finish, but fabrics take damage and the dryer itself is at risk.
Moisture sensor trouble. Dryers built in the last 15 years or so use two metal bars inside the drum to measure how wet the load is. As clothes dry, conductivity drops and the sensor ends the cycle. Fabric softener residue coats those bars and makes them read "dry" too early. Wiping them with rubbing alcohol costs nothing and sometimes solves the whole problem.
Repair or Replace: The Actual Math
Dryers are mechanically simple. Not many moving parts, and the components that fail most often, elements, thermostats, igniters, belts, tend to be inexpensive and straightforward to swap. A dryer that's five to eight years old and otherwise sound is almost always worth repairing.
The math changes when the machine is past twelve years, has already been repaired once or twice, and the drum bearings are going. You'll hear that as a rumble or grind while it tumbles. Add a failing heating system on top of worn bearings and the repairs start to approach the price of a new unit, except the new unit comes with a warranty.
